Connectivity guide

Plan backup connectivity around the failure

Understand shared dependencies, failover behavior, and testing before relying on a second connection.

Name the interruptions you need to withstand

A primary circuit outage, a building power failure, a damaged entry path, and a failed router are different events. A second circuit may address some of them and leave others unchanged.

Select critical applications and the minimum operating capacity needed during an outage. Recovery expectations should cover both the time to switch and what remains usable afterward.

Questions to take forward

  • List critical applications and minimum capacity.
  • Identify power, equipment, access-path, and carrier dependencies.
  • Set realistic recovery and degraded-service expectations.

Verify diversity rather than assuming it

Two provider names do not necessarily mean two independent physical paths. Services can share building entries, conduits, upstream facilities, or underlying access providers.

Wireless backup can offer a different access medium, but signal quality, coverage, congestion, data policies, and power still matter. Ask providers what diversity they can substantiate for the location.

Questions to take forward

  • Ask about shared last-mile infrastructure and building entries.
  • Review wireless coverage and applicable data limits.
  • Confirm power and equipment dependencies for both services.

Test the transition and the return

Failover depends on the network configuration as well as the access services. Session-based applications may disconnect during a transition, and public IP changes can affect remote access or allowlists.

Agree on safe test windows with the responsible IT team. Validate the backup path, the return to primary service, monitoring, and escalation procedures.

Questions to take forward

  • Test critical applications on the backup connection.
  • Review security policies and addressing on each path.
  • Document results and repeat tests after material network changes.
